Precarious jobs on the rise
A 113 % increase in jobs being offered on a basis that doesn't involve an employment relationship being created between the worker and the employer was observed in 2024 on Työmarkkinatori.
Why is this worrisome? These types of contracts are being used because they offer added flexibility to employers and increased freedom to employees. Employers also cut down on costs such as social security and healthcare service provisions, that the employees need to arrange by themselves. If you are currently considering such a contract, do a calculation on whether the salary offered will be enough to cover for these in addition to the taxes, accounting costs, and insurances that you will need to pay as an entrepreneur.
Note also that as an entrepreneur, light entrepreneur or freelancer, you may not be eligible anymore for unemployment benefits, until you have completely terminated all your business activities.
What to do if this type of contract is your only option?
As a registered jobseeker, you may be eligible to apply for a start-up grant, however note that this is only granted for new businesses and for a maximum of 12 months.
